Central Vermont, Ride A Train & Step back in Time This Weekend

In Central Vermont you have the opportunity to ride a train and step back in time this weekend. On Saturday, May 12th there will be a celebration for National Train Day, where old fashioned passenger cars can be boarded in Essex for a trip back in time to Waterbury VT. The trip will be roughly 35 minutes long and will represent a wonderful way to experience how train travel used to be.

It wasn’t too long ago that trains were a true staple in Central Vermont and New England. When trains were a preferred mode of transportation train stations were often the center of a community. The historic train station in Waterbury is demonstrative of a time gone by, its vintage architecture enabling us all to envision comings and goings of the past.

One focus of this year’s celebration of National Train Day will be a discussion of train track improvements that have been made in Central Vermont and across the region as a result of Hurricane Irene. In addition Governor Shumlin will be on hand to celebrate trains when the passenger cars pull into the station in Waterbury.
