Poetry Competition in Barre VT Huge Success

A recent poetry competition held in Barre VT was a huge success. Held at the Barre Opera House last Wednesday, March 13th, high school students from all over Vermont took part in the “Poetry Out Loud” contest. The winner won $200 and an all-expense paid trip to Washington to represent Vermont at the national finals.

This year was the 8th year for the “Poetry Out Loud” contest which continues to grow in popularity. Created from a collaborative effort by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, the idea behind the contest is to emphasize poetry as an oral art. Here in Central Vermont and across the state the competition has created an interest in classic poetry and inspired the often lost art of recitation.

Students in Barre last Wednesday represented 38 high schools in Vermont, with the winner coming from St. Johnsbury Academy. The event was well attended and inspiring. This is a wonderful example of how Vermont High Schools nurture both creativity and a passion for the classics.

Main Street Back in Business in Downtown Barre VT

Main Street is back in business in downtown Barre VT. Saturday marked the big celebration, with a parade and plenty of shopping. The construction is now a part of the past and merchants, small business owners, and restauranteurs could not be happier. Coinciding with “Small Business Saturday” the grand re-opening of an important part of our town was celebrated by residents and visitors alike.

There was quite a turnout for the Barre celebrations which included fireworks in addition to the parade. The Main Street Cash Mob and the Gold Coin Prize Giveaway were highlights as well. Local shops and stores are the backbone of the Barre community and the newly renovated Main Street will no doubt prove to be a great support for our existing businesses as well as a lure for new businesses.

Future Of Barre Museum Up To Community

The future of a Barre museum is up to the community. The Vermont Granite Museum and Stone Arts School is a cornerstone of our area and is facing a crossroads, as are many institutions across the nation, due to funding. The museum was started and never completed due to a lapse in funding, and while its buildings and premise are an instrumental part of the downtown core, the community’s desires on how to move forward will play a large role in its future.

This Thursday, October 11, from 7 to 9:15 pm, there will be a public forum held at the Vermont Granite Museum to uncover what the community’s interest is in seeing completion of the museum. This is a great opportunity for the Barre community to have its voice heard and help decide on both the area’s future and its preservation of the past.

Nutrition Important Component of Central VT Schools

Celebrate Barre Vermont This Week

The Barre Heritage Festival will kick off this Wednesday, July 25th, and run through Sunday, July 29th, offering what is sure to be the highlight for many this summer. The 5 day celebration will focus on community, culture, history, and arts associated with the Barre VT area.

This week’s festival in Barre will start Wednesday with festivities that include an open studio at Studio Place Arts, a farmers market at City Hall Park, a reception for the Paletteers Art Show, and a concert in Currier Park, representing a few of the day’s highlights . Thursday will continue with a variety of sales, more art and a race at Thunder Road. Friday there will be more music and food vendors. Saturday the full festival will be in swing with numerous activities, a variety of entertainment, great food, and more. Sunday let there be no rest for the weary as the day starts off with a morning trail race. Barre VT Renovations Good For Residents

The renovations happening in downtown Barre VT are good for residents in more ways than one. Not only will the revitalization of downtown Barre mean a boost to the local economy but the cobblestones that were taken out are available for residents who may want the stones for their own property improvements. Truckloads of debris from the digging up of Main Street were brought to a dumping ground and those who wish to dig through and locate granite pavers for their own personal use can do so.

The granite paving stones were discovered beneath the asphalt that is being dug up in downtown Barre Vermont and they are thought to date back to the early 1900s. Those that would like some of the stones are responsible for digging through and locating them on their own, they simply need to sign a form at City Hall and the pavers are free. This is a great way to recycle and use a bit of Barre history at the same time.

The renovation of downtown Barre Vermont will be great for the area and no doubt a boost to home values. BCK Helps Bank Expand In Barre Vermont

BCK Real Estate has helped Merchant’s Bank expand its service in Barre Vermont. Merhcant’s Bank is a Vermont based bank that covers the entire state and it recently opened a new branch in Barre with the help of BCK Real Estate. Merchant’s Bank has been in Barre VT for more than 30 years and will be opening its new branch office soon.

When representatives of Merchant’s Bank contacted me for help in locating a site for a new bank I examined all available land in Barre to find the best location for a new branch office. The spot I found is located in the Rite Aid Plaza in the 300 block of North Main Street, a location most people saw as a parking lot and nothing more. With some hard work I was able to secure the spot for Merchant’s Bank and work out a long term commercial lease on the spot. The bank broke ground on May 16th.

The Barre Opera house has long been a cornerstone of the community.  Serving more than just opera, the venue works as a public meeting space as well.  Over the years time has dealt its blows to the opera house, opened in Barre Vermont in 1899 after a fire destroyed it in 1898.  A constant work in progress the last decade has brought a full service box office, state-of the-art lighting, modern heating and cooling, and  other aesthetic improvements.

The Barre community benefits tremendously from the Barre opera House, one of the area’s finest landmarks.  While the diverse offerings are fabulous to enjoy, the wonderfully restored building itself is deeply rooted in the area’s history.  Whether you want to see a production from a local children’s theater, absorb an opera, or take in a town meeting, the Barre Opera House provides a place for community members to convene under similar interests.
