Main Street Back in Business in Downtown Barre VT

Main Street is back in business in downtown Barre VT. Saturday marked the big celebration, with a parade and plenty of shopping. The construction is now a part of the past and merchants, small business owners, and restauranteurs could not be happier. Coinciding with “Small Business Saturday” the grand re-opening of an important part of our town was celebrated by residents and visitors alike.

There was quite a turnout for the Barre celebrations which included fireworks in addition to the parade. The Main Street Cash Mob and the Gold Coin Prize Giveaway were highlights as well. Barre VT Renovations Good For Residents

The renovations happening in downtown Barre VT are good for residents in more ways than one. Not only will the revitalization of downtown Barre mean a boost to the local economy but the cobblestones that were taken out are available for residents who may want the stones for their own property improvements. Truckloads of debris from the digging up of Main Street were brought to a dumping ground and those who wish to dig through and locate granite pavers for their own personal use can do so.

The granite paving stones were discovered beneath the asphalt that is being dug up in downtown Barre Vermont and they are thought to date back to the early 1900s. Those that would like some of the stones are responsible for digging through and locating them on their own, they simply need to sign a form at City Hall and the pavers are free. This is a great way to recycle and use a bit of Barre history at the same time.

The renovation of downtown Barre Vermont will be great for the area and no doubt a boost to home values. Don’t Miss Thunder Road in Barre VT This Weekend

Don’t miss Thunder Road in Barre VT this weekend. A car show on Saturday, followed by a car race on Sunday will fill the souls of all car lovers in Central Vermont. If you love cars, speed, and action the 14th annual Merchants Bank 150 will open the Thunder Road season at 1 pm this Sunday, April 29th. The day before the opening race head out to Thunder Road in Barre Vermont for a car show like no other. The drivers will be on hand to meet, as will the cars, from 10 am until noon on Saturday, April 28th.

Thunder Road will showcase a new division in its race series this season, with the addition of the Rough Riders. The Rough Riders involve cars that are at least 10 years old, hitting the speedway in Barre Vermont in costume. Whether these cars are painted as the Incredible Hulk, Spider Man, or Tweety Bird, they will speed around the track while entertaining at the same time.

The Barre Opera house has long been a cornerstone of the community.  Serving more than just opera, the venue works as a public meeting space as well.  Over the years time has dealt its blows to the opera house, opened in Barre Vermont in 1899 after a fire destroyed it in 1898.  A constant work in progress the last decade has brought a full service box office, state-of the-art lighting, modern heating and cooling, and  other aesthetic improvements.

Barre Vermont Looking to Be Workplace for Displaced Workers

It looks like Barre Vermont is going to be the workplace for state workers displaced by Hurricane Irene.  Government offices in Waterbury were terribly damaged from the storm that tore through Central Vermont this past Fall and the Governor has stated his dedication to securing jobs as well as office space and eyes are on Barre. The Mayor is backing up this plan.

According to a recent article in the Times Argus, “Lauzon builds on Shumlin promise of state jobs”, approximately 1500 state employees were misplaced by the damage to the offices in Waterbury, which means a potentially large number of people coming to Barre for work. More people means a boost to Barre’s economy.

Hand in hand with the possibility of government workers being relocated to Barre comes the development of City Place, an exciting mix of retail, office space and more that is intended to invigorate downtown Barre. This could also be a location for some of the state’s misplaced workers.

While Hurricane Irene devastated parts of Central Vermont, some good has come from a bad situation. Barre Vermont stands to have an opportunity to reinvent itself while revitalizing its core. Central Vermont Receives Funds to Help Recover From Irene

Central Vermont communities have received some funds to help recover from Hurricane Irene. The devastation caused by Irene was deep, as one of the area’s worst recorded storms, and many homeowners lost much more than power, many lost their homes and their livelihood. While many think of home owners being affected, renters throughout Central Vermont were affected as well.

In early December funding was allotted for affordable rental housing to be built in Barre Vermont. The funding will help those in need of affordable housing in Barre to have a roof over their head. Central Vermont shelters could get more help if a Vermont Congressman has his way. Being a small state has its advantages, but when it comes to shelters for the homeless it’s another story. Vermont, and other small states, receive only $300,000 annually in federal funding. When you divide this up between the number of shelters in the state it can be of no surprise that any shelter in Central Vermont is sadly underfunded.

The Good Samaritan Haven, a homeless shelter in Barre Vermont, is filled to capacity and then some. Congressman Peter Welch from Vermont is making his rounds and doing what he can to change federal funding options for smaller states, states which he sees getting short shrift when it comes to funding for the homeless. In larger populations the number of homeless are more obvious, but just because you come from a smaller state does not make the issue any less important. Welch’s goal is to increase smaller state’s aid by $400,000.

The homeless shelter in Barre has been used as a stepping stone for many people caught in unfortunate circumstances. The ability to have a place to regroup is of the essence to get ahead, and the shelter in Barre has served that purpose for many individuals in the Central Vermont community.

Trains are running from Montpelier to Barre, which is great news for those living in Central Vermont who were immediately affected by hurricane Irene.  Transportation is an incredibly important factor in daily life, a factor which when hindered by a natural disaster can seem monumental.  The railways throughout Vermont were impacted by the wrath of Irene but were immediately attended to.  Most services have either resumed or are being attended to by bus systems.
 
Those living in Central Vermont can rest easy knowing a major route, that between Montpelier and Barre, is operational, connecting Central Vermonters with Burlington for those needing to get to work or play.  This is especially positive being that some lines in Vermont are still being worked on.  The NECR (New England Central Rail) has worked tirelessly to resume service to Central Vermont.
