Collaborative efforts have helped a cider mill in Waterbury VT go solar. The Cold Hollow Cider Mill is a cornerstone of central Vermont, open 7 days a week for visitors to watch the process of pressing apples to make cider, a process which hasn’t changed over the past 90 plus years as the mill still uses the same rack and cloth press which was built in the 1920s. The mill is now home to something equally as inventive and built in 2012, a field of solar panels.

While the owner of the mill had been hoping to use solar energy to make the operation more environmentally friendly and cost-effective, solar energy is not exactly cheap. The 25 solar panels at the Waterbury mill were installed by a Williston company, All Earth Renewables, but paid for by Green Lantern Development. Green Lantern Development provided the opportunity to investors and the energy created will help recoup the investors cost. In 6 years the mill can purchase the solar panels at 50% of the installed cost.

Any way you look at it the solar panels are a win-win for all involved, offering the mill a 5% energy savings immediately and the opportunity to buy the panels and therefore the energy production at a fraction of the cost in a few years time. The investors will reap the reward of payback on their investment. In addition a company that specializes in solar energy in Williston VT was used in the process. The new solar panels at the Cold Hollow Cider Mill are a great example of collaborative efforts in Central Vermont.
