Central Vermont Receives Funds to Help Recover From Irene

by John Biondolillo and Renee Dezotelle, BCK Real Estate

Central Vermont communities have received some funds to help recover from Hurricane Irene. The devastation caused by Irene was deep, as one of the area’s worst recorded storms, and many homeowners lost much more than power, many lost their homes and their livelihood. While many think of home owners being affected, renters throughout Central Vermont were affected as well.

In early December funding was allotted for affordable rental housing to be built in Barre Vermont. The funding will help those in need of affordable housing in Barre to have a roof over their head. Affordable rentals throughout the Central Vermont area are in need as so many residents were misplaced as a result of Irene. Funding continues to be doled out to help people in a variety of ways, from financial counseling and home buying education to money for repairs and rebuilding.

Contact BCK Real Estate today to learn more about investing in Central Vermont real estate.  There couldn’t be a better time to buy rental property in Vermont.  Interest rates are exceptionally low and whether you would like to buy a house or a multi-dwelling unit, if becoming a landlord is in your plans you could be helping families displaced by flooding at the same time.

Central Vermont Shelters Could Get More Help

by John Biondolillo and David Alexander of BCK Real Estate

Barre Vermont

John Biondolillo / BCK Real Estate

Central Vermont shelters could get more help if a Vermont Congressman has his way. Being a small state has its advantages, but when it comes to shelters for the homeless it’s another story. Vermont, and other small states, receive only $300,000 annually in federal funding. When you divide this up between the number of shelters in the state it can be of no surprise that any shelter in Central Vermont is sadly underfunded.

The Good Samaritan Haven, a homeless shelter in Barre Vermont, is filled to capacity and then some. Congressman Peter Welch from Vermont is making his rounds and doing what he can to change federal funding options for smaller states, states which he sees getting short shrift when it comes to funding for the homeless. In larger populations the number of homeless are more obvious, but just because you come from a smaller state does not make the issue any less important. Welch’s goal is to increase smaller state’s aid by $400,000.

The homeless shelter in Barre has been used as a stepping stone for many people caught in unfortunate circumstances. The ability to have a place to regroup is of the essence to get ahead, and the shelter in Barre has served that purpose for many individuals in the Central Vermont community.

Central Vermont Community Gets Involved With Energy Efficiency

Central Vermont

Central Vermont BCK Real Estate and John Biondolillo

by John Biondolillo and Susan Quatrini, BCK Real Estate

The Central Vermont community gets involved with energy efficiency. Workshops titled Button Up Vermont aim to educate home owners in Central Vermont on how they can make changes to their homes that will help them stay warmer without draining their wallets. The workshops are a joint effort put forth by both the Vermont Community Action Council and Efficiency Vermont.

How can these workshops help? Information is power, and the key here is to help those in Central Vermont stay warm this winter while using as little power as possible. The workshops are two hours in length and are designed for small business owners as well as home owners. The three key elements involved include how to make your home or business more energy efficient, more affordable, and more comfortable. Something most owners of Central Vermont real estate strive for. This is the time of year when energy efficiency weighs most heavily on our minds.

There is a Button Up Vermont workshop slated for Wednesday, November 16th, at 7 p.m. in Barre, at the town offices. There will another workshop the following day in Montpelier, at Capital City Grange Hall. At 6:30 p.m. Click here to visit the current calendar of scheduled workshops in Central Vermont.

There are many Button Up Vermont workshops that are already set, but there is also an opportunity to request hosting a workshop as well. Click here to learn more about Button Up Vermont from the Efficiency Vermont website.

Montpelier A Drop-Off Spot for Tire Program

by John Biondolillo and Scott Gagnon, BCK Real Estate

Montpelier Vermont

Central Vermont BCK Real Estate and John Biondolillo

Montpelier has a drop off spot for a Central Vermont tire program that helps people in two ways.  The Wheels for Warmth program helps people who need tires at affordable prices and helps recycle tires while raising money to help people heat their homes throughout Central Vermont.  Winter is coming which enhances the need for quality tires with good tread, and certainly the need for heating, both of which can be very expensive for those with limited incomes.

In Montpelier tires can be dropped of this Thursday and Friday, October 27 and 28, from 3 p.m. through 7 p.m. at DuBois Construction on Three Mile Bridge Road. Tires that meet the criteria will be accepted at no charge to the donor.

Tires must meet the following standards to be accepted at no charge:
• The tires must have a remaining tread of at least 2/32nds of an inch.
• No worn spots can be visible, no cord can be showing.
• There can be no cut(s), snags or cracks in the sidewalls that are longer than 1 inch and/or are deep enough to expose cords.
• No visible signs of structural damage.
• Studded tires cannot be missing studs.
• Tires cannot be repaired in anyway, no plugs.

Tires that are in good shape will be sold to those residing in Central Vermont who need tires but cannot afford to buy brand new ones. People who need these tires will pay no more than $15 per tire. Tires that don’t make the cut will cost $4 each for recycling. All of the money raised through this program, from tires that are sold and tires that are recycled, will go to the Central Vermont Community Action Council’s emergency and supplemental fuel assistance program. This program helps many in Central Vermont stay warm in our cold winter months.

If you have any tires lying around, make sure you get to the drop-off in Montpelier this Thursday and Friday. Other locations include the Stowe Transfer Station, and Casella Waste Management, in Williston.

Wheels for Warmth is in its 7th year and has raised over $100,000 over the years to help residents of Central Vermont stay warm in the winter. Click here to learn more about the program and how you can help make a difference for your neighbors.

Central Vermont Real Estate, Fall is Great Time for Projects by John Biondolillo and Kevin Copeland

By John Biondolillo, Kevin CopelandBCK Real Estate

Central Vermont real estateCentral Vermont BCK Real Estate John Biondolillo

Central Vermont BCK Real Estate John Biondolillo

If you own Central Vermont real estate, fall is a great time of year for projects, and you can never start too soon! The lovely warm days and colorful landscaped of the autumn season can have many inhabitants of Central Vermont so relaxed that they may forget what is coming around the corner.  Cooler days, freezing temperatures, and even the first snow flurries can catch even the most prepared off guard, which is what makes now the ideal time to prepare your home for winter and get seasonal outdoor projects underway.

Some of the most important tasks to take care of involve putting your Central Vermont property to bed for the winter.  Mow your lawn, prune your shrubs and trees, and cut back summer’s gardens.  The more prepared your landscape is for winter the easier your spring gardening will be.  This is also an ideal time to plant bulbs for the spring.  Whether you favor daffodils or tulips, getting bulbs in the ground now will make your Central Vermont property vibrant come May.

Another part of your Central Vermont home to pay attention to is your gutter system.  Take time to clear leaves and debris from your gutters and make sure your heat tape is operational.  Taking care of your gutters now can prevent unwanted ice dams and winter leakage in the middle of January.

One last, important step is blowing out your irrigation system and disconnecting your hoses.  A burst pipe can occur in freezing temperatures even if you haven’t turned a hose on in months.

Taking care of your Central Vermont real estate and preparing your home for winter is an important part of home ownership.  If you are unable to perform necessary tasks give us a call.  We can recommend landscapers that can help take care of all your property’s needs.

Trains are running from Montpelier to Barre, which is great news for those living in Central Vermont who were immediately affected by hurricane Irene.  Transportation is an incredibly important factor in daily life, a factor which when hindered by a natural disaster can seem monumental.  The railways throughout Vermont were impacted by the wrath of Irene but were immediately attended to.  Most services have either resumed or are being attended to by bus systems.

Those living in Central Vermont can rest easy knowing a major route, that between Montpelier and Barre, is operational, connecting Central Vermonters with Burlington for those needing to get to work or play.  This is especially positive being that some lines in Vermont are still being worked on.  The NECR (New England Central Rail) has worked tirelessly to resume service to Central Vermont.

Central Vermont communities and organizations have come together in the wake of Irene, getting services back on track and life as close to normal as possible.  The attention to the railways was quick and much appreciated by all.  Click here to visit the website for the NECR and get up to date information on routes you are most interested in.

Central Vermont Communities Survive Flooding, Move Forward

Central VermontCentral Vermont communities survived the flooding caused by Irene and are moving forward, focusing on community and keeping small businesses open. While Vermont made headlines focusing on the path of destruction that the hurricane caused, it is important to remember that much of the state survived unscathed. In typical Vermont fashion, those who were left untouched are pulling together for those that need help.

The Vermont Irene Flood Relief Fund has been established to help small businesses that were affected by flood and storm damage get back on their feet, recognizing that small business is what holds the state’s economy together. Central Vermont communities are raising money for this fund, helping the businesses that need it most.

In Waterbury Vermont local school children are adding to relief efforts. Last week students from the Thatcher Brook Primary School in Waterbury packed lunches for those in need throughout the area, demonstrating the sense of caring and community that pervades through all ages in Central Vermont. Those who have not been impacted have stepped up to help those who have been.

Contact us today to learn more about living in Central Vermont. When faced with challenge ours is a community that pulls together to help and move forward.
