Poetry is alive in Montpelier VT this month.  It may be a little known fact that April is National Poetry month, but not here in Montpelier where events will be held all month long inviting people to both listen to poetry or take an opportunity to write their own poems.

This past weekend kicked off poetry events in Montpelier Vermont but there are still events to enjoy.  This evening for example, there is a workshop titled “Writing in the Present Tense” at the Kellogg-Hubbard Library.  This coming Saturday there will be a poetry workshop geared towards children at the Children’s Library, in the Kellogg-Hubbard Library.  Next Monday morning, April 16th, there will be a discussion titled “Who Was Robert Frost and Who Are We?” held at the Pavilion Auditorium.

Sales Tax on Ballot in Montpelier VT

A sales tax is on the ballot in Montpelier VT, where voters will decide if money can be raised from a 1% sales, lodging, and food tax or not.  For some in Montpelier the tax is seen as a way for the local government to avoid cutting its budget, proponents see the tax as a fair way of generating funds in a time when money is scarce.

Montpelier is quintessentially Vermont, offering unique locally owned stores without the presence of the big box stores that are a part of today’s American landscape.  The shop owners and inhabitants of Montpelier like it this way, maintaining the charm of our Central Vermont area.

Some shop owners worry that an added tax will deter people from spending money and affect locally owned businesses.  On the flip side, many communities improve their budgets with an added local sales tax and are doing quite well.  Here in Montpelier we will have an answer to this debate tonight when the votes have been tallied.  If you haven’t made it to the polls you have until 7 pm tonight.

Montpelier A Drop-Off Spot for Tire Program

Montpelier has a drop off spot for a Central Vermont tire program that helps people in two ways.  The Wheels for Warmth program helps people who need tires at affordable prices and helps recycle tires while raising money to help people heat their homes throughout Central Vermont.  Winter is coming which enhances the need for quality tires with good tread, and certainly the need for heating, both of which can be very expensive for those with limited incomes.

In Montpelier tires can be dropped of this Thursday and Friday, October 27 and 28, from 3 p.m. through 7 p.m. at DuBois Construction on Three Mile Bridge Road. Tires that meet the criteria will be accepted at no charge to the donor.

Tires must meet the following standards to be accepted at no charge:
• The tires must have a remaining tread of at least 2/32nds of an inch.
• No worn spots can be visible, no cord can be showing.
• There can be no cut(s), snags or cracks in the sidewalls that are longer than 1 inch and/or are deep enough to expose cords.
• No visible signs of structural damage.
• Studded tires cannot be missing studs.
• Tires cannot be repaired in anyway, no plugs.

Tires that are in good shape will be sold to those residing in Central Vermont who need tires but cannot afford to buy brand new ones. People who need these tires will pay no more than $15 per tire. Tires that don’t make the cut will cost $4 each for recycling. All of the money raised through this program, from tires that are sold and tires that are recycled, will go to the Central Vermont Community Action Council’s emergency and supplemental fuel assistance program. This program helps many in Central Vermont stay warm in our cold winter months.

If you have any tires lying around, make sure you get to the drop-off in Montpelier this Thursday and Friday. Other locations include the Stowe Transfer Station, and Casella Waste Management, in Williston.

Montpelier Real Estate, Great Time to Be a Buyer

Montpelier real estateWith regards to Montpelier real estate it is a great time to be a buyer.  Affordability levels are the best they have been in over 30 years, being noted as a generational low as far as housing costs.  According to a recent article from Realty Times housing has cost a home buyer roughly 25% of his income since 1975.  That percentage is currently 17%, an 8% reduction in the buyer’s favor.  This is great news for anyone who has been considering buying Montpelier real estate.

Lending is tougher than it has been in the past but on the positive side these tighter practices should make certain that a buyer is getting into a property that he can afford.  A home buyer of a Montpelier property needs great credit, money for a down payment, and steady income.  Low mortgage rates are keeping affordability levels ideal for buyers as well.

Housing is closely tied to employment and while employment levels are not rising at quickly as anticipated, employment is improving.  The greater strides made in employment the better housing will appear.  For now, those who have jobs, money for a down payment and the ability to acquire a loan are in the driver’s seat.  It is a buyer’s market when it comes to Montpelier real estate.

Montpelier, the capital city of Vermont, is seeking a Fire Chief. Current Chief retiring 5/1/11 after 5 years as Chief, 10 years as Deputy Chief and 31 years with department. Department Head position which answers directly to the City Manager. Combination Fire/EMS department with 19 full time employees, 2 regular part time employees, up to 15 call force members and $1.93 million budget.

The Fire Chief is responsible for all fire suppression and prevention activities within the City and as part of regional mutual aid. Responsible for ambulance service in Montpelier and three neighboring towns (by contract). Responsible for administering local/state building/health codes including permit issuance, inspection, plans reading and enforcement. Facilities and equipment are in top condition and department has a record of excellent service and response to public. Emphasis is placed on fire prevention, education and training.

Candidate should have demonstrated experience with: all aspects of fire suppression including incident command, ambulance service delivery -including billing and collections, active fire prevention efforts, building codes and inspection systems, supervision in a unionized environment, recruitment and retention of a call force, and other aspects of departmental operation including public engagement, budgeting, purchasing, strategic planning and personnel management.

The successful candidate will have: good communication and public presentation skills, demonstrated ability to track multiple priorities and activities, ability work with tight budgets for the best public value and strong leadership skills. Applicant must have an Associates Degree, preferably in Fire Safety or Public Administration. Completion of Executive Fire Officer Program at the National Fire Academy is preferred but not required. Experience as Chief Officer or Deputy Chief Officer for a comparable department, or supervisory position in a larger department is required. Formal education requirement may be waived based on sufficient work experience. Must have, or once had, valid certifications in firefighting and EMS. Building code certifications a plus. Must have, or be able to obtain, a valid State of Vermont Driver’s License.

The City of Montpelier offers a comprehensive benefit package. Compensation based on qualifications and experience, current budgeted annual salary is $73,000. As a public service to the residents, the City of Montpelier will provide you with the following information upon request:

       Whether a property is in or out of the Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA) as shown on the current Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) of the City.

       Additional flood insurance data for a site, such as the FIRM zone and the base flood elevation or depth, if shown on the FIRM,

       They have a handout on the flood insurance purchase requirement that can help people who need a mortgage or loan for a property in the SFHA.

       They have copies of completed FEMA Elevation Certificates for buildings built in the floodplain since 1991.

If you would like to make an inquiry, please tell us the street address of your property. We are open 9:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday – Friday. Call us at (802) 223-9506 or drop by the Department of Planning & Community Development in City Hall. Anyone in the office can provide the needed information. There is no charge for this service.
