It’s the end of July, and the Barre Heritage Festival is officially underway! With Thunder Road, horse-drawn wagon rides, an art show, and a horseshoe tournament downtown Barre “celebrates the old and embraces the new.”  Starting on July 21st and going until the 25th, the festival centers around the Parade going through Main Street at 11:30 on Saturday. There’s the Rotary Pancake Breakfast and Spaghetti Dinner on the Aldrich Lawn; Quarry tours at Rock of Ages; live music, a silent auction & the farmer’s market in City Hall Park; a 5k Race along the Millstone Trails; Thunder Road at night; Food & Gift Vendors all over downtown and plenty more.

Vermont Governor Douglas as well as State Senator Bill Doyle and local representatives Tess Taylor and Tom Koch were on hand.  A large contingent from Barre Partnership was also on hand to mark the occasion.

The Spaulding High School Boys Hockey team won their first State Championship in 13 years last night. After letting in an early goal, Barre goalie Chris Pelkey was unbeatable as he turned away shot after shot.  Colby Laperle was the toast of Barre after his hat trick led the Crimson Tide to a 4-1 victory of Champlain Valley Union.  Laperle’s first goal was assisted by Garrett Arnold, son of Northfield Savings Bank mortgage officer Ian Arnold.

Marcia and I attended the annual Barre Opera House Valentine’s Gala at Lucia’s Restaurant the other night. On our way home we drove by the beautiful park in downtown Barre.  The trees were lit up brightly and the Gazebo sported a big red heart.

Unseasonably warm weather and lower than normal snowfall amounts have put the damper on Barre’s snow sculpture contest but not on Barre’s spirit. Barre is a great place to live.
