Celebrate New Year’s Day in Central Vermont outdoors. Across the nation the park service is instigating New Year’s Day hikes and if you are in Central Vermont over the holidays you are in luck, as you are located near some of the state’s greatest parks.

This is the time of year when most of us are thinking about our New Year’s resolutions, how to be healthier and how to get in better shape. Luckily all of us in Central Vermont have a great opportunity to start 2012 out on the right foot, outdoors and active!

New Year’s Day Hikes:

At Little Rover State Park in Waterbury Vermont there will be a hike at 10 am and noon.
At the Groton Nature Center in Groton Vermont and the Molly Stark State Park in Wilmington Vermont hikes will begin at 10 am.
Would-be hikers will meet at the Kettle Pond parking area in the Groton State Forest in Groton Vermont at 11 am for a hike.
Hikes at Underhill State Park in Underhill Vermont, Kingsland Bay State Park in Ferrisburgh Vermont, Gifford Woods State Park in Killington Vermont, and Woodford State Park in Bennington Vermont will start at 1 pm.

Whether you want to sleep in or get up early you can find a hike that will suit your needs in Vermont. Some are closer, some further away, but regardless our Central Vermont area affords everyone the opportunity to get outdoors and be active on the first of the year.

Central Vermont Communities Survive Flooding, Move Forward

Central Vermont communities survived the flooding caused by Irene and are moving forward, focusing on community and keeping small businesses open. While Vermont made headlines focusing on the path of destruction that the hurricane caused, it is important to remember that much of the state survived unscathed. The Vermont Irene Flood Relief Fund has been established to help small businesses that were affected by flood and storm damage get back on their feet, recognizing that small business is what holds the state’s economy together. You can visit Vermont’s #1 tourist attraction: Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream plant, a veritable Mecca for lovers of premium ice cream. Take a tour of the facility and watch those delicious flavors being made. A Scoop Shop and souvenirs are available there too.

Just a few minutes up the road in Waterbury Center are Cold Hollow Cider Mill, Lake Champlain Chocolates, and the Cabot Creamery Annex.

Waterbury is called “Vermont’s Recreational Crossroads,” meaning fast access to an unlimited variety of diversions during all seasons of the year. Let’s start with outdoor sports. It was in this part of Vermont that American skiing got its start, at Stowe in the 1930′s.

Tax Incentives Expanded For Vermont Home Buyers

Legislation passed by Congress, and signed by the President, allows “repeat” or “move up” buyers to qualify for a federal tax credit of up to 10% of the purchase price up to $6500. This is an element of the homebuyer’s tax credit that previously was only available to first time buyers but now has been expanded. To qualify, a “repeat” buyer must have lived in a home they used as their primary residence for a at least 5 consecutive years out of the past 8 years. The purchase price of the new home cannot exceed $800,000 and annual income cannot exceed $125,000 (single filers) or $225,000 (married filing jointly). The new home must be used as the purchaser’s primary residence and the cost of the new home being purchased does not have to be higher than the previously owned home. The buyer must be under contract by last day of April 2010 and close on or before June 30th of next year.

The tax credit is still obtainable to first time purchasers for 10% of the purchase price up to $8000. A first-time purchaser is defined as anyone who has not owned a home in the past 36 months. The end of April deadline and income limits outlined above also applies to first time purchasers.
