In Central Vermont you have the opportunity to ride a train and step back in time this weekend. On Saturday, May 12th there will be a celebration for National Train Day, where old fashioned passenger cars can be boarded in Essex for a trip back in time to Waterbury VT. The trip will be roughly 35 minutes long and will represent a wonderful way to experience how train travel used to be.

It wasn’t too long ago that trains were a true staple in Central Vermont and New England. When trains were a preferred mode of transportation train stations were often the center of a community. The historic train station in Waterbury is demonstrative of a time gone by, its vintage architecture enabling us all to envision comings and goings of the past.

One focus of this year’s celebration of National Train Day will be a discussion of train track improvements that have been made in Central Vermont and across the region as a result of Hurricane Irene. In addition Governor Shumlin will be on hand to celebrate trains when the passenger cars pull into the station in Waterbury.

Don’t miss Thunder Road in Barre VT this weekend. A car show on Saturday, followed by a car race on Sunday will fill the souls of all car lovers in Central Vermont. If you love cars, speed, and action the 14th annual Merchants Bank 150 will open the Thunder Road season at 1 pm this Sunday, April 29th. The day before the opening race head out to Thunder Road in Barre Vermont for a car show like no other. The drivers will be on hand to meet, as will the cars, from 10 am until noon on Saturday, April 28th.

Thunder Road will showcase a new division in its race series this season, with the addition of the Rough Riders. The Rough Riders involve cars that are at least 10 years old, hitting the speedway in Barre Vermont in costume. Whether these cars are painted as the Incredible Hulk, Spider Man, or Tweety Bird, they will speed around the track while entertaining at the same time.

Central Vermont celebrates mud season with talent.  In the mountains mud season is the time after ski season when everything is melting, wet, and subsequently muddy, an in-between time when people lament over the end of skiing and look forward to summer activities.  In Central Vermont this time of year is celebrated with a talent show.

This year marks the 18th year for the annual Mud Season Variety Show, otherwise know as “The Local Re-View”, being held in Randolph VT this coming Saturday at 7:30 pm.  Talent from many of our Central Vermont towns will be performing, offering laughs, tears, and lots and lots of entertainment.  Juggling, piano playing, guitar playing, singing, and comedy are just a few of the acts you can expect to see on stage at Chandler Music Hall.

Poetry is alive in Montpelier VT this month.  It may be a little known fact that April is National Poetry month, but not here in Montpelier where events will be held all month long inviting people to both listen to poetry or take an opportunity to write their own poems.

This past weekend kicked off poetry events in Montpelier Vermont but there are still events to enjoy.  This evening for example, there is a workshop titled “Writing in the Present Tense” at the Kellogg-Hubbard Library.  This coming Saturday there will be a poetry workshop geared towards children at the Children’s Library, in the Kellogg-Hubbard Library.  Next Monday morning, April 16th, there will be a discussion titled “Who Was Robert Frost and Who Are We?” held at the Pavilion Auditorium.

 Waterbury Vermont has recently become home to a new watering hole.  The Prohibition Pig opened up in a familiar spot on South Main Street in Waterbury, where one of the area’s favorite eatery used to be, The Alchemist.  The Alchemist closed its doors after Irene caused flooding and major damage to the restaurant, making it unfeasible for the owners to justify the cost of reopening.
